Moto2: Espargaro Takes Over As Valencia Test Ends

Friday, February 10, 2012

Pol Espargaro knocked Scott Redding from the top of the Valencia Moto2 timesheets, during Friday's third and final day of the opening test of 2012.

The Spaniard, a former 125cc title contender and double podium finisher in his debut Moto2 season last year, took his new Pons Kalex machinery to the top courtesy of a 1min 35.4sec lap time.

That was 0.2sec under the best day two lap time by Marc VDS (Kalex) rider Redding. The Englishman was slightly slower on the final day, but still took joint second place (+0.3sec) alongside Speed Master (FTR) rider Andrea Iannone.

The top six on the unofficial timesheets, complied by the Valencia Circuit, was completed by Simone Corsi (Ioda), Claudio Corti (Italtrans Kalex) and Julian Simon (BQR FTR).

In the new Moto3 class, Red Bull KTM's Sandro Cortese was fastest over all three days and dipped under the 1min 41sec barrier on Friday.

But the German left the test just 0.1sec ahead of BQR FTR-Honda rider Maverick Vinales, with Alberto Moncayo a further 0.2sec behind for Aspar Kalex-KTM.

Danny Kent (Red Bull KTM), Luis Salom (RW Kalex-KTM) and Niklas Ajo (TT Motions KTM) completed the top six.

Moto2 and Moto3 pre-season testing will continue at Jerez next week. The latest reports indicate that 2011 Moto2 title runner-up Marc Marquez will once again be absent as he waits for his vision problems to fully heal.
