Bautista recovers after 'miracle' moment

Gresini Honda's Alvaro Bautista survived a massive moment during morning practice at the second MotoGP test at Sepang in Malaysia to bounce back with the fifth fastest time on his RC213V.

Bautista completed 24 laps during the rain-interrupted session, setting a fastest lap of 2m 02.959s to put him into the top six on the opening day of the test behind Repsol Honda duo Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa and Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies.

The Gresini rider, whose best lap was 1.198s adrift of reigning champion Stoner, miraculously stayed upright following a huge moment by keeping his Honda upright on his elbow.

“I had a miraculous escape this morning in turn five when I basically crashed but managed to keep the bike upright on my elbow,” he said. “The rainfall brought our day to an early conclusion because with the already precarious conditions it was better to leave everything else we had planned until tomorrow.

“The track surface was in poor condition and it was very difficult to push so we focused on experimenting with some different set-up solutions to increase my confidence on the 1000cc bike.”
